This research sought to gain insight into the state of art of mathematics education in the mathematical education of engineers. An empirical method was developed to confine the review to 132 articles from 1968 to 2020. The results yielded eleven themes, with 70.5% of articles dealing with teaching and learning mathematics in basic sciences. The findings show that engineer education involves different types of mathematics and disciplinary knowledge working in coordination; the professional development of mathematics teachers who train engineers remains a pending issue; and research both in and out of schools is essential to identify other meanings of mathematics needed by engineers to perform better.
