Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the evolution of saving banks from the point of view of their overall importance in order to interrelate them and be able to assess their progress in the decade preceding 2010, the year, together with 2011, in which the largest reorganization of this sector has taken place, going from 46 to only 15 institutions (including CECA), as a result of the survival of some of them and the merger processes or the creation of Institutional Protection Systems (IPS). Using a methodology based on data envelopment analysis, we evaluate their comparative efficiency and their position within the merger processes which start from 2010, showing significant differences between organizations. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
