Abstract

The properties of ferrous materials ultimately depend on their microstructure, which is in turn dependent on the chemical composition and the manufacturing sequence. The required service properties of steel and cast iron as a structural material are determined by the applied loads, which can be of a mechanical, tribological and/or chemical nature. If they are to be used as functional materials, their physical properties are important.
