Abstract

It has recently been suggested that peasants never consistently form matrilocal joint households. Residence data from a Greek island community seem to contradict this statement. Many of the real and apparent contradictions in residence pattern studies are due to the ambiguous and inconsistently utilized terminology. A nomenclature system proposed by Pedro Carrasco (1963) is employed in order to present the Greek data precisely and unambiguously .
