Abstract

Cardiac surgery patients are increasingly complex due to comorbid conditions, clinical acuity and advancing age. In order to maximize patient care for this diverse group of patients, a team based approach is required to provide comprehensive care in the postoperative period. Early identification of common post cardiac surgery complications ensures timely treatment and contributes to decreased hospital stay. This chapter outlines an approach to postoperative care of the patient undergoing cardiac surgery.
