Dementia research needs in Ghana: a perspective

Abstract

Background Estimates suggest that about 50 million individuals are living with dementia globally. Thus, dementia remains a public health concern at all levels. Although there are several factors that offer conditions for the provision of empirical evidence for an intervention, little is known about dementia within the Ghanaian population. This write-up aims to describe Ghana’s dementia research needs. Methods Based on results from a study conducted in the Kintampo area of Ghana, the study team strategized to identify dementia research needs in Ghana. Additionally, a literature search was used to identify and outline the dementia research needs. Results The study identified three main thematic areas: diagnosis and prevalence; studies on the prevention of dementia; and other interventions to improve the quality of life of older persons. For diagnosis and prevalence; epidemiological studies should be conducted using a nationally representative sample to determine the prevalence of dementia. In terms of studies on the prevention of dementia, it is important to conduct studies that will highlight ways of preventing or delaying the onset of dementia in Ghana. There are other approaches to combat the burden of dementia such as building the capacity of primary care health care workers to address this challenge among other population and their families. Conclusions There is paucity of epidemiological data on dementia in Ghana. Thus, the research needs identified will be useful in dealing with the challenges that dementia presents to the Ghanaian population.
