Abstract

One of the most significant events in the field of plant tissue culture during recent years has been development of techniques for the isolation, culture, and fusion of protoplasts, i.e., of cells devoid of their retaining walls. Protoplast culture techniques are especially important because of their potential application in efforts to improve plant species by cell modification and somatic hybridization.
