Abstract

The Faraday effect in rare earth alkali germanate glasses has been studied. The variation of the Verdet constant with the con-centration of rare earth ions was found to be linear. The compositions that were selected fall in a range that corresponds to a conversion from diamagnetic to paramagnetic character. This result led to the discovery of zero magnetic rotation glasses.
