Abstract

Cell-free protein synthesis is advantageous for membrane protein production because of the potential lethality of membrane proteins synthesized in cell-based systems. Additionally the ability to adapt the membrane composition for each membrane protein increases the likelihood of functional expression. In this chapter we describe methods for membrane protein production by the cell-free protein synthesis system assisted by detergents and lipids. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
