Abstract

The paper describes analysis of the biomass potential for energy and the effective use of biomass for energy in the Baltic States (Latvia and Lithuania). Analysis of the Baltic States energy sectors development in the last years shows that it is a positive tendency - increasing role of the local and renewable energy resources in the energy balances of the Baltic States. Increasing utilization of biomass, wind energy, energy from small hydro power stations, biogas was happened in last years. The energy sector in the Baltic States offers the potential for considerable changes in terms of the structure of the sector, increasing energy efficiency measures and using renewable energy sources. A number of economically profitable, cost-effective options for mitigation greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the energy sector have been identified in the country's National Energy Strategies.
