The process of gametogenesis and gamete structure have been studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Rounding off of the protoplast is followed by three mitotic divisions of the nucleus and cytokinesis to give eight gametes in each gametangium. Changes in wall structure of the gametangium and loosening of wall microfibrils takes place at the site of the future exit pore where the outer cell wall is stretched to form a characteristic “papilla”. Anisogametes are shed, each with two smooth flagella, a single nucleus, a very large chloroplast with a conspicuous pyrenoid and an eyespot composed of one layer of osmiophilic granules. © 1979 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
