This chapter provides a brief discussion on variable speed motors and drives for the tandem cold rolling process. The basic characteristics of the cage rotor induction motor and the synchronous motor are presented, along with the voltage converter as a viable modern drive for these machines. Cycloconverters are also addressed as a less preferred drive. Material is included which describes the concepts of the field oriented control technique as a proven method for control of present-day drive systems. Some comments are presented on the selection of motors and drives for tandem cold rolling applications.
