This chapter provides a general overview of the steps involved in model refinement and formulation. Topics cover both the refinement of qualitative models and general concepts on quantifying models for simulation. Central are the reasons for why one wants to build models in the first place, the role of the expert modeler in community-based system dynamics (CBSD), and approaches to working with both causal maps and simulation models. An emphasis is placed on team-based approaches and developing capacity.
