Abstract

This piece of research considers how the main Spanish press reports when dealing with topics related to religions such as: Judaism, Islam and Protes - tantism, all of which have been present in the Spanish culture for centuries and are currently in the minority as a religious practice. From an academic point of view we consider how the media affect public opinion in terms of the agenda-setting and framing theories. Our theory is that both the topics themselves and how the press portray the aforementioned religions will contribute to the how their public image is forged. The study is an analysis of the content of the El País and ABC newspapers over 12 months, with a sample of 800 news stories which gives different individual results for each religion, more related to cultural aspects than religious identity.
