The article highlights the role of the Moscow Mining Academy in the development of the Russian system of mining industry personnel training. Modernization of higher education system in accordance with the Top-Priority National Project on Education resulted in the formation of a network of National Research Universities (NRU) in the country in 2009. After special competitive examinations, the status of NRU was bestowed to the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys State Technological University (currently National University of Science and Technology - MISIS). In 2014 the Moscow State Mining University was affiliated to NUST MISIS. In 2013 a new Russian project aimed at enhancement of global competitive power of the domestic universities was launched. As a result of the competition between universities, a few of them were selected, including NUST MISIS. The University has developed a package of activities aimed to attract researchers from all over the world, and to create and implement educational programs at the level of the best foreign universities. Attraction of internationally reputed researchers is implemented in the framework of the Open International Grant Competition held by MISIS to support research activities in new areas by means of establishing dedicated research laboratories headed by leading scientists. In 2016, based on the competition results, the University set about creating research laboratories under projects with significant research findings. When developing inhouse educational standards for training of mining engineers, NUST MISIS relies on the practical century-long experience, classical structure of specialties and actual demand for new professional competences of a to-be mining engineer. The University successively implements the package plan aimed at attraction of the most able young people to be educated and trained in the sphere of mining engineering. The training system for mining engineers by NUST MISIS was scored in the systems of independent appraisal of mining university activities in 2017. The University was included in the Top-50 universities for mineral and mining engineering by QS World University Ranking 2017 at position 31.
