Abstract

Households constitute an important sector in the economy with regard to their use of natural resources (raw material and energy) and the disposition of household waste. In The Netherlands, households produce about 20% of the total of solid waste and use about 30% of the total energy, mostly for home heating. The figures for other developed countries do not differ very much from these figures. Household and other waste is used as landfill (40%), is incinerated (40%), or composted (20%).
