Fear and anxiety is common in the preoperative period. Sedative premedication is widely used in the United States, particularly with benzodiazepines, which have the benefit of anxiolysis and anterograde amnesia. However, this practice has come into question especially considering that one of the adverse effects is a paradoxical reaction characterized by disorientation, restlessness, and agitation.
