Nontraditional aromatic molecules hold tremendous promise for the design and realization of advanced materials for organic electronics applications. In this report, we describe recent work with the 10 π-electron methano[10]annulene molecule. We used chemistry established by Vogel and by Neidlein to incorporate this molecule into organic semiconducting polymers and found that they provide for highly delocalized charge carriers upon electrochemical oxidation/doping into conductive materials. Extensions to a variety of annulene-heteroaromatic copolymers will be described along with pertinent optical and electrical characterization data. © 2010 IUPAC.
