Of the many causes of bone marrow failure, some are associated with syndromes that affect only hematopoiesis and peripheral blood counts, whereas others present with more systemic manifestations. The genetic and molecular basis of many of these disorders is being investigated with better understanding of the pathogenesis as the goal of research. Most of these syndromes can be treated with supportive care for variable periods of time, but stem cell transplant offers the only hope for cure in many cases. © 2006 Humana Press Inc.
