The direct anterior approach to the hip is a truly minimally invasive technique that has gained popularity with total hip arthroplasty. This approach is performed through an intermuscular and internervous plane that requires no split or release of muscle from the femur or pelvis. Studies have shown low amounts of tissue damage and faster recovery with this technique compared to traditional surgical approaches. Isolated acetabular liner exchange done through this approach allows this technique to be expanded to revision hip surgery. Revision hip surgery performed through traditional approaches may require lengthy recovery periods and prolonged hospitalization. The direct anterior approach may allow patients to recover more rapidly and have shorter hospital stays after revision. Dislocation is a common complication of isolated acetabular liner exchange, and this may be decreased with preservation of posterior structures through this approach.
