In high-voltage transmission systems, the insulation often costs more than the cables carrying the current. Using modern materials has also tended to create a problem of progressive degradation. Research at Manchester University is studying the mechanisms involved in the breakdown process, with the eventual objective of developing composite materials to keep the degradation problem at bay and allow the same material to be used for insulation and support, leading to the possibility of the one-piece pylon.
