Abstract

Studies on the vitality of Chinese dialects or Chinese heritage languages are rapidly emerging. The complexity of such studies, however, has to be appreciated. The main challenge is the wide range of dialects spoken by the Chinese, many of which are neither mutually intelligible nor at the same stage of shift or maintenance.
