In order to understand the endogenous control of any regenerative phenomenon it is first necessary to identify those chemicals involved in the processes of dedifferentiation, cell division and expansion, organization and differentiation. Furthermore, it is essential to relate such chemicals to each of these processes and establish any specific regulatory roles they may have. This is a prerequisite to any appreciation of how the processes themselves are integrated on a spatial and temporal basis.
