It is suggested that the terrigenous red beds deposited in arid conditions are the common origin of Cu for all cupriferous sandstone and shale-type deposits. Cu was leached from these rocks by subsurface waters and precipitated at H2S barriers which are of two types: syngenetic and epigenetic. The decisive control on deposit formation is the nature of the environment.-R.E.S.
