Abstract

The study of the photoelastic properties of glass is very important for many reasons. First, the photoelastic effect is one of the most noteworthy indications of the interaction of light with matter. This phenomenon was observed in glass almost two centuries ago and has since been provoking experimental and theoretical research by many physicists, among them Maxwell, Fresnel and Raman.
