In one early paper (Zuelzer, W., and Mudgett, R. 1950) two groups of a total of 55 kernicteric newborn infants were compared as regards etiology, laboratory data, and neuropathology. One group of patients consisted of 23 cases, all kernicteric and associated with erythroblastosis fetalis, and a second group of 32 cases, not associated with erythroblastosis, but associated with a variety of other suspected causes.
