Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia Abstract: Panic disorder and agoraphobia are both severe anxiety disorders, which progress chronically if not being treated adequately. In 80% of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia, cognitive-behavioural therapy is able to show successful treatment outcomes. Today, cognitive-behavioural treatment approaches represent the method of choice. First, the present article will describe the phenomenology of both disorders as well as aetiological models that form the basis of cognitive-behavioural treatment approaches. Subsequently, concrete interventions in the treatment of panic attacks and agoraphobia are presented and empirical findings on cognitive-behavioural approaches are briefly summarized. Finally, the course of the treatment of panic disorder is illustrated by a case study.
