Abstract

The authors present the first faunistic inventory for Chironomidae of the Lebanon where 142 taxa have been identified from the rivers Oronte and Litani in the Bekaa plain and from a river near Beyrouth.81 species are new records for the eastern Mediterranean; 131 are new records for the Middle East, the only previous records being for lake species from Israel. The geographical distribution of chironomids of the Lebanon indicates that this region can be placed at the cross-roads of palaearctic, ethiopian and oriental influences. © Masson, 1983.
