Abstract

Lecture delivered at 28th Ordinary General Meeting held in the Athenaeum, Melbourne, 3rd Feb. 1893; describes Moreton Bay Aborigines (height, battle with Brisbane natives, 1865), arrival of McIntyre, Clarence & Richmond Rivers tribes in the Bunya Bunya Mountains to eat bunya; recounts meeting with Kargoolnahs (Paroo River) during bora ceremony, their offer of death or initiation; his subsequent initiation & later recognition of tribal marks having saved his life; retention of human remains after death recorded in same tribe; notes food sharing among tribes in the Georgina Country and Gulf Country; fighting methods; briefly describes Kalkadoons between McKinlay & Camooweal & dread of the ocean among the Wakii; brief general discussion of marriage, education, initiation, peacefulness; relates moon legend of Gulf Country tribes; natives present at lecture described
