Abstract

In this chapter the authors describe nonverbal measures of special abilities within the neuropsychological domains of attention and executive functions, spatial cognition, and memory and learning. The clinical approaches, applications, and limitations of representative tests within each domain are described. Nearly 100 norm-referenced tests are listed along with appropriate age ranges, distinctive features, and expressive and receptive language requirements. Clinical indications for nonverbal neuropsychological assessment are also described, as well as the cognitive processes involved in nonverbal assessment. It is concluded that nonverbal testing provides a good solution when, to borrow a phrase, words get in the way. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)(create)
