The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) concept of perioperative care arrived in Asia more than a decade after it began in Europe. However, the adoption of ERAS practices and principles was slow and sporadic, and it was not until May 2016 that the first two ERAS® Centers of Excellence—The Medical City (TMC) in the Philippines and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) in Singapore—were established in Asia. This signaled the start of a period of increased efforts to educate and engage hospitals and healthcare teams in the region. Even as interest and adoption increased, new challenges and revelations emerged that were unique to Asia.
