Galvanic taste stimulation method for virtual reality and augmented reality

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to introduce our research into galvanic taste stimulation. Since galvanic taste stimulation can induce and modify taste sensations, it is expected to be applied in taste display technology for virtual and augmented reality. In addition, it is expected to be applied to support eating restriction systems. GTS has two stimulation types according to the polarity. The anodal stimulation where the anode is attached near the tongue can induce a metallic or electric taste. In contrast, a cathodal GTS in which the cathodes are near the tongue inhibits tastes induced by electrolyte water solution during stimulation and enhances tastes when GTS is stopped. Through our research, we investigated the mechanism of GTS and developed novel stimulation methods. Although some problems were resolved through our study, there are some problems using GTS for taste display in virtual and augmented reality systems. However, since GTS can modify and induce taste sensations without chemical materials, it can present attractive taste technology in the future.
