Abstract

In this essay it is argued that mainstream economics is not a monolithic block but instead it is composed by an orthodox nucleus, where neoclassical thinking prevails, and a set of approaches on the edge that share with the orthodoxy their interest for formal modeling (mathematical, computational or statistical), and for analyzing micro behavior to describe aggregate phenomena. By reviewing bibliographic references in the RePEc data base, it is found that worldwide research using approaches on the edge of mainstream economics grew substantially in the period 2000-2012, while this type of research is relatively rare in Mexico. This lack of plurality is also reflected in the country's study programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, where the curricular structure is limited mainly to an orthodox perspective and, in few cases, to an heterodox focus (i. e., outside mainstream).
