Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) is one of the most important legume crops in the world. Approximately 80% of the world’s soybean is produced by countries in North and South America. Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in soybeans, due to the symbiosis with Bradyrhizobium, is economically and ecologically beneficial because it reduces the need for synthetic N-fertilizers. This chapter describes history and trends of soybean production, influence of soybean BNF, and development of inoculants to increase the crop yield in North and South America.
