Abstract

Complete esophageal obstruction is challenging to address endoscopically and surgically. When an obstructed segment of the esophagus spans longer than 3 cm, a NOTES (natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgical) approach to the restoration of the esophageal lumen can provide relief for a complete obstruction with lower morbidity than traditional surgical approaches. This procedure, Per-oral Endoscopic Tunneling for Restoration of the Esophagus (POETRE) uses the techniques employed in third-space endoscopy to restore esophageal continuity in cases of complete esophageal obstruction.
