Abstract

AIM: Elucidation of RPA classes depends on the various combinations of PFs of HGG. Medical students frequently find it difficult to derive precise RPA classes due to presence of multitude of PFs and their distinct combination. We tried to develop a teaching tool to elucidate RPA classes based on PFs at bed-side. BACKGROUND: Recursive Partitioning Analysis (RPA) of prognostic factors (PF) in high-grade gliomas are useful in predicting survival probabilities. There are six RPA classes that are based on the presence of certain combination of PFs. Histology, age, karnofsky performance status (KPS), extent of surgery, neurological deficits and the mental status are the various PFs. Combination of the spectrum of the PFs yield exact RPA class. However, medical students find it difficult to remember/memorize these prognostic factors and RPA classes. So we decided to devise a bedside tool to derive RPA classes by combination of prevailing PFs of HGG. METHOD(S): We have cut the card-board circularly with progressively increasing diameters. Each concentric panel so created had a single spectrum of PFs. Some RPA classes do not depend on all the five PFs. To match these PFs to precise RPA classes, blank panel on the fourth and fifth circular card board were colored and that could be matched. We also cut a window ranging from two to six in the paracentral region at a particular distance from center on all the cards, so that they overlapped to display the exact RPA classes. RESULT(S): Concentric panel with paracentral windows on the progressively increasing diameter of circular card can exactly determine the RPA classes of HGG based on the combination of existing PFs. CONCLUSION(S): Our devised concentric panel can determine the precise RPA classes after combining the PFs and can be helpful teaching tool and is first of its kind.
