Abstract

The paper surveys the development of ideas of insulation for housing and describes modern practice of cellular insulation, particularly with different plastics. The ″pros and cons″ of polystyrene, polyurethane and urea-formaldehyde are reviewed and the effects on fuel economy, condensation problems and fire risk considered. The paper concludes with a discussion of thermal insulation related to fuel use.
