Abstract

This chapter reviews exercise-physical activity in intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by focusing on practice and research applications with children and adults. In the first section of the Chap. 1 address measurement methods in order to properly monitor indices such as exercise frequency and duration, patterns of physical activity, energy expenditure, and adherence. This section also discusses how functional analysis methodologies can be used to isolate contextual variables affecting exercise-physical activity and to inform intervention decision making. Next, the chapter considers effective performance improvement strategies with typically developing children and adults. This information provides a background for presentation of intervention objectives, procedures, and results with people who have IDD. In the concluding section "Measurement" present several practice recommendations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
