Severe Storm Detection: Panel Report

Abstract

The operational problem of severe storm detection is driving the modernization plans not only of the National Weather Service (NWS), but those of many other countries worldwide as well. With modern Doppler radar soon to become operational in the United States, and with new radar networks (both conventional and Doppler) being installed or planned in much of the developed world, we must exploit the technology as best we can. One may also expect that the widespread use of research radar systems around the globe will lead naturally to operational technology transfer. An excellent example is the shared use by both research and operational groups of the dual-wavelength Doppler radar facility at King City, Ontario, Canada.
