Although some sleep disturbance is normal during pregnancy, a subset of women experience sleep disturbances that are associated with clinically significant distress or impairment that warrants further evaluation and treatment. This chapter provides a broad overview of the epidemiology, etiological factors, and consequences of poor sleep quality, short sleep duration, and insomnia disorder during pregnancy. The nascent body of research on interventions to improve sleep during pregnancy is reviewed, and practical suggestions for clinical assessment and treatment are provided.
