Abstract

The proposal concerns the territorial regeneration of a territory in Calabria (Italy) whose history begins from 580 BC. C. up to the early 1900s, a story linked to the mining and processing activities in the foundries in the area. The territory falls between the province of Vibo Valentia and that of Reggio Calabria embracing the Regional Park of the Serre, the industrial archeology sites are now part of nature itself. The territory has many potentials and many resources to be taken into consideration for a hypothetical 'green' territorial development to relaunch both the territory and the villages, on the basis of sustainable tourism with activities and attractions that could create induced activities and jobs. On the basis of what the territory can offer, it is possible to tackle some design themes aimed at sustainable development. The issues touch on some of the objectives of the United Nations Agency 2020–2030 and could be implemented thanks also to the resources of the National Plan for the Recovery and Resilience of Italy. The goal is to adapt the villages and the territory to a Smart Model, considering them points of attraction to create different economies, including renewable energy (micro-hydroelectric, agrovoltaic) to power those that would become communities in full autonomy.
