Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, consisting of five main islands, 17,508 smaller islands, spread across three seismic belts that run throughout this country. The islands of Indonesia are a result of the collision of three major plates in which the Australian-Indian plate in the South, the Eurasia plate in the Northwest, and the Pacific plate in the Northeast are all converging in the region of Southeast Asia (Fig. 4.1).
