Abstract

Academic institutions use the promotion and tenure process to appraise the long-term value of a faculty member. To apply for promotion and tenure, faculty members typically submit a dossier of their work in the areas of teaching, research, and service. For each of these three areas, this chapter provides a definition, explains typical evaluation criteria, and presents strategies for documenting one’s work. Suggestions are also provided for obtaining specific information from one’s institution and successfully navigating the promotion and tenure process.
