Abstract

Amputation is one of the oldest surgical procedures. Today, in a developed country in peacetime, the amputation rate is approximately 1 in 10,000 of the population. In England and Wales (population 54,000,000), some 5,500 new amputees are referred for prosthetic fitting annually. The reasons for these amputations are as follows (figures are approximate):
