Abstract

The effect of photoperiod on the initiation of reproductive tissues in Ascophyllum nodosum has been examined. Receptacle initiation was promoted under 8:16 and 12:12 photoperiods and inhibited under a 16:8 photoperiod and under continuous irradiance. A white light night- break inhibited the SD response. The results are discussed in relation to the phenology of A. nodosum and photoperiodism in some other macroalgal and higher plant systems. © 1980 British Phycological Society.
