Abstract

6 Conclusion: Chitosan possesses many favorable characteristics for use as a gene delivery system. However, further improvements in the structure and function of this system, such as optimization of chitosan (molecular weight or DDA), chemical modification using functional groups, and formation of ternary complexes, are still necessary. The results reviewed in this chapter indicate that such rational modifications to compensate for the limitations of chitosan as a gene carrier will lead to improved transfection efficiencies.
