(c) Springer-Verlag GmbH Deutschland (Original), The present chapter addresses the question of how interindividual differences in emotion regulation come about, what role genes and environment play here, how epigenetic modifications are related to emotion regulation and psychopathology, to what extent the foundation of emotion regulation ability is possibly already laid in the womb, and what the mechanisms are that underlie these relationships. Finally, we will discuss whether environmental influences can permanently affect our behavior - and thus our emotion regulation - by epigenetic means and whether it is possible to potentially reverse these changes, e.g., through psychotherapy or specific emotion regulation training.
