論文要旨:コロイド粒子分散系における界面動電現象(外部電場中におけるコロイド粒子の電気泳動等) の理論について解説する。とくに,Smoluchowski,Hückel,Henry,Overbeek のそれぞれの理論につい て述べる。粒子のゼータ電位と粒子周囲の拡散電気二重層の役割,電気泳動遅延効果,緩和効果について解 説する。また,Smoluchowski の理論と Hückel 理論との違い,Overbeek 理論から予測される電気泳動移動 度の極大の存在をめぐる論争について述べる。最後に,1993 年に始まる界面動電現象に関する国際シンポ ジウム ELKIN の歴史と最近の話題について述べる。 Abstract: A review is given on theories of electrokinetic phenomena in a suspension of charged col-loidal par ticles (e.g., electrophoresis of colloidal par ticles in an applied electric field). A special emphasis is put on the electrophoresis theories of Smoluchowski, Hückel, Henr y, and Overbeek. The roles of the par ticle zeta potential and the electrical double layer formed around a charged par ticle, the electrophoretic retardation ef fect, the dif ference between Smoluchowski's and Hückel's theories, and the relaxation ef fect are extensively discussed. Historical arguments relating to the appearance of a maximum of the electrophoretic mobility plotted as a function of the par ticle zeta potential are addressed. Finally, the histor y and present activities of the International Symposium of Electrokinetic Phenomena (ELKIN) star ting in 1993 as well as the topics present in the recent symposia are reviewed .
