Abstract

Research examining the origin and the development of the larynx has been performed since the late nineteenth century and has provided valuable insights into the anatomy and pathologies of the larynx. In this chapter, we provide a brief review of laryngeal anatomy, followed by a summary of the prenatal development of the larynx. Finally, we discuss development of the framework, the muscles, and the nerves of the larynx in detail. A better understanding of the processes of laryngeal development is crucial to understand the anatomy of the larynx and the mechanisms of breathing, swallowing, and voice production.
