Abstract

Conflicts of interest arise when primary and secondary interests differ. For medical practice, the primary interest is always to optimize patient wellbeing. Secondary interests, however, may include financial and other concerns. In fact, secondary interests are so widespread that conflicts of interest are themselves ubiquitous. The universality of such conflicts demands active, thoughtful management of conflicts of interest to ensure that patient concerns remain paramount.
